You can read the full announcement on the Unreal Engine 4 site. Epic Games has released two free packs of environment assets from Soul, its 2014 Unreal Engine 4 demo, comprising nearly 600 individual meshes, along with their associated materials and textures. Companies don't generally give away millions of dollars worth of assets if they're planning to make more money with them. This news should also signify that there's no chance Paragon is coming back, no matter how many signatures a petition gets. As a developer, I'm not sure I'd care about using assets heavily linked to characters from a "failed" game in my projects, but there could still be plenty of more anonymous assets, such as animations or environmental objects, that could come in handy. What does all this mean? In theory, this means that a game like, say, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - which uses UE4 - could incorporate Paragon's characters into its games, possibly as skins. Epic intends to release more asset packs throughout spring and summer 2018. The assets are being released for free, despite Epic claiming they were developed at a cost of $12 million. But you will be able to use the game's assets for your own projects, thanks to another bout of generosity from Epic Games.ĭevelopers using Unreal Engine 4 can now make use of characters, skins, animations, VFX, dialogue, and environment components from Epic Games' MOBA.
In a little more than a month, you don't be able to play Paragon any more.
